III. GRADUATE CURRICULUM

A. English

1. Request for a 400-G level course

a. ENG 476, Senior Seminar, 3 s.h.

Dr. Banash was in attendance and noted that Council members should have received a sample syllabus via email. Council members asked Dr. Banash to highlight the differences between the work required of an undergraduate versus that of a graduate student. He responded that the graduate students would write significantly more and that the grading scale is different. Dr. Hyde questioned the title of the course if it was now going to be open to graduate students. Dr. Banash responded that it is a multi-titled course that will have the specific topic transcripted. Dr. Harbke asked what has changed that this should now be a graduate-level course. Dr. Banash noted that there are two other similar courses offered that are very successful. This course will allow the students to complete their degrees on time without having to wait for certain courses to be offered again at the graduate level. Dr. McQuillan noted some updates that should be made to the syllabus.

Motion: To approve the request. (Locke/Hyde)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

B. History

1. Request for a 400-G level course

a. HIST 492, Capstone Seminar in Public History, 3 s.h.

Drs. Hall and Roberts were present. Dr. Roberts stated that there currently is not a public history course at the graduate level but there is interest from the students. Dr. Hall noted that they created one course to serve both undergraduate and graduate students and that the differences are outlined in the syllabus. Dr. Laurent asked about the additional meeting time for the graduate students and if that would change the credit hours.  Dr. Hall responded that it would balance out with times that the course did not meet for the full amount of time. Dr. Hyde questioned the use of “capstone” in the title of the course. Dr. Hall stated that it is the department’s preference and there are already other courses with similar titles. Dr. Roberts added that this is a great opportunity to bring professional development to graduate students.
