III. GRADUATE CURRICULUM

A. Museum Studies

1. Request for integrated baccalaureate and master’s degree program

a. St. Ambrose University Bachelor of Arts in Art History/WIU Master of Arts in Museum Studies

Dr. White was in attendance with Dr. Hoon and Ms. Larrabee. Dr. White stated that this agreement is very similar to a current agreement with Wartburg College. The Museum Studies program has already received several St. Ambrose students into the regular program and was approached by St. Ambrose with the idea of the integrated program. These students will need to meet the same requirements as the WIU integrated students. Dr. Hemphill questioned the course numbers to be used as bridge courses from St. Ambrose. Dr. White confirmed that 300-level is the senior level at St. Ambrose and equivalent to our 400-level courses. Dr. Kapale asked about the backgrounds of the students in the program. Dr. White responded that most have a history background but no class is specific to any discipline. Ms. Larrabee added that this is an excellent marketing opportunity for the graduate program.

Motion: To approve the request. (Locke/Kapale)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

B. Music

1. Request for a new graduate (500 or 600-level) course

a. MUS 535, Music for the Learner with Exceptionalities, 3 s.h.

Dr. Lapka provided the background for this course and stated that a lot of current teachers did not have a similar course in their undergrad so this course would help give them the needed information plus provide a more in-depth look for those that did have a similar course. Dr. Laurent raised concerns over the similarity between a course that he currently teaches that has music students enrolled. Dr. Lapka responded that those students are music therapy students and this course is designed for music education students. Ms. Blackinton asked about the referenced letter of support in the proposal. Dr. Brown stated that it would be sent via email to the Graduate Office.

Motion: To approve the request. (Locke/Kapale)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

b. MUS 537, Instrumental Jazz Pedagogy, 3 s.h.

Dr. Brown noted that there was a need for a more in-depth course in jazz pedagogy. Dr. Laurent asked if this would be a required course. Dr. Brown stated that no, it would be an elective for a variety of students. Dr. Locke provided additional information regarding the course.

Motion: To approve the request. (McQuillan/Locke)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

c. MUS 540, Advanced Choral Pedagogy and Techniques, 3 s.h.

Dr. Brown provided information on the proposal and stated that the faculty member proposing the course is one of few people certified in this specific training which could be a draw for prospective students.

Motion: To approve the request. (McQuillan/Locke)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

d. MUS 600, Master’s Project, 1-4, repeatable to 6 s.h.

Dr. Brown explained the changes in the program requirements that would align with this new course. Dr. Hawkins added that the emphasis in music education will be online and this course could be used as the exit option for that emphasis. There is also a possible new degree in the works for Fall 2020 that could use this course as an exit option as well. Dr. Hemphill asked if this course could be used as an elective. Dr. Hawkins responded that this is intended to be an exit option and not an elective.

Motion: To approve the request. (Locke/Kapale)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

2. Request to change graduate program requirements

Dr. Brown noted that the requirement changes incorporate the newly approved courses with the core remaining the same. This change also removes applied performance as a requirement for the music education emphasis. The musicology emphasis removes a 400-G level course and adds in a 500-level course. Dr. Hyde asked about two of the newly approved courses not listed in the requirements. Dr. Brown clarified that they are being offered as electives so will not be listed in the requirements.

Motion: To approve the request. (Hyde/Locke)
MOTION CARRIED 7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB
