President Goldfarb’s Statement on Diversity

As President of Western Illinois University, I want to emphasize that diversity is an integral part of our institution’s strategic plan: Higher Values in Higher Education. We believe that, in order to demonstrate and support our core values of Academic Excellence, Educational Opportunity, Personal Growth, and Social Responsibility, we must celebrate the richness of our diverse community and provide an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all.

To that end, the University welcomes students, faculty, and staff from all racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, and national backgrounds, as well as those of all ages, abilities, and sexual orientations. Western Illinois University encourages the free exchange of ideas, a celebration of differences, and an affirmation that individual worth is to be highly respected. The University shall be a place where each person shall have the right to freedom of expression and the expectation for fair and impartial judgment. Workshops, seminars, classes, organizational activities, residence life, and daily life all provide rich opportunities for the affirmation of our commitment to diversity.

We encourage all members of the community to take full advantage of the many opportunities – in and outside of the classroom – to learn about the diverse society in which we live. Through cultural activities, academic coursework, organizations, and social events we can all learn to appreciate and enhance the diversity of our WIU community.
