What is the BGS Degree and is it Right for You?
The BGS degree is an online degree program that provides place-bound students an opportunity to earn a regionally accredited bachelor's degree. The BGS program does not designate a major. Many students consider this an important feature because it eliminates the constraints of a major’s predetermined curriculum and allows BGS students more flexibility to develop a multi-disciplinary and carefully focused course of study. Please note: if your goals require a specialized degree such as is needed to become a certified public school teacher, certified public accountant, chemist, etc., this degree may not meet your needs.
With the BGS program students may earn academic credit many different ways:
- Take a course at WIU or another regionally accredited institution
- Prepare a prior learning portfolio (this may include work experience and other “real-life” experiences )
- Successfully complete proficiency exams
- Military assessment (ACE)
Individuals with baccalaureate degrees from regionally accredited colleges or universities may not be admitted to the WIU Bachelor of Arts in General Studies Degree program. However, firefighters who hold a bachelor's degree who would like to complete additional coursework through the Degrees at a Distance Program and attain a second bachelor's degree should contact the School of Distance Learning, International Studies, and Outreach Office by calling 309/298-1929 or via email at BGS@wiu.edu.
