School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach

The School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach encompasses three different and exciting areas at Western Illinois University. Distance Learning provides online and face-to-face courses on and off campus. The Testing Center is available to students taking an online course that requires a proctor.

The Bachelor of Arts in General Studies (BGS) degree is a highly individualized, flexible, non-majored undergraduate degree, which may be completed fully online, on campus, or a combination of both formats. The BGS degree and online courses are particularly well suited for adult students with other responsibilities and for traditional students interested in pursuing an affordable and challenging undergraduate degree program.

Interdisciplinary Studies program (ISP) students design and pursue individualized programs of study leading to either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. ISP students may pursue concentrations in Youth Development; Renewable Energy and Biofuels Technology; Renewable Energy and Wind Technology; and Renewable Energy, Policy, Planning, and Management.

International Studies is uniquely structured to assist international students on the WIU campus. The International Admissions Office assists students during the application and visa process. International Student Services will help student with any issues or questions during their time at WIU. There are a wide range of services and activities designed to help students adjust to their new surroundings, get involved in campus and community activities, and ensure students have a successful academic career at WIU. Study Abroad and Outreach provides students with a variety of opportunities to study around the world. Outreach offers educational training, professional development, adult learning and youth programs on the WIU Macomb campus and the Quad Cities campus. Western’s English as a Second Language Institute (WESL) has provided excellent English language education fro students from all over the world for 40 years. WESL is CEA-accredited and offers excellent support to students in the program.
