Homecoming 2015: "Rocky's Road Trip"

All roads lead to WIU Friday-Saturday, Oct. 2-3, as Western Illinois University hosts its annual Homecoming celebration with "Rocky's Road Trip." Homecoming 2015 will feature reunions for the classes of 1965, 1975 and 1990, but alumni of all years are welcome to celebrate being a Leatherneck.

Schmidt to Deliver Annual Hallwas Lecture

Western Illinois University Foreign Languages and Literatures Chair Gary Schmidt will deliver the 13th annual John Hallwas Liberal Arts Lecture Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 9-10.

The lecture, titled "The Role of the Liberal Arts in Fostering Empathy: Language, Literature, and Human Understanding," will be presented at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 in Riverfront Hall, on the WIU-Quad Cities campus. Schmidt will then deliver the lecture on the Macomb campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 in the University Union Grand Ballroom.

Fallen Soldiers 5K Run/Walk is Oct. 10

Runners and walkers of all levels and ages are invited to take part in Western Illinois University's fourth Fallen Soldiers 5k Run/Walk Saturday, Oct. 10 at the WIU-Macomb campus.

Since 2012, the WIU Fallen Soldiers 5k Run/Walk has raised more than $46,000 for the WIU Fallen Soldier's Scholarship Fund, which honors two alumni who were killed in the line of duty. Last year, nearly 500 participants joined together to honor Capt. Derek Dobogai and Lt. Col. Robert Baldwin.

Al Sears Jazz Festival is Sept. 18-20

The Macomb Chamber of Commerce and Western Illinois University's BCA present the 14th annual Al Sears Jazz Festival Friday-Sunday, Sept. 18-20.

This year's festival kicks off at the Western Illinois Museum at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.18, with "Journey to Jazz," featuring Semenya McCord and Frank Wilkins.

WIU Art Faculty Open Exhibit Sept. 26

The Western Illinois University Department of Art Faculty Biennial Exhibit will be open on Sept. 8 and run through Sept. 26 in the University Art Gallery, galleries A, B and C.

There will be an opening reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. Guests can enjoy complementary refreshments and a cash bar.

Town & Gown Sept. 24

To kick off the 2015 Homecoming festivities, WIU's annual Celebrating Town and Gown Event will be held in the fall again this year.

WIU Homecoming Weekend Oct. 2-3

Alumni and friends will descend on the Western Illinois University campus Oct. 2-3 to celebrate Homecoming 2015: "Rocky's Road Trip: All Roads Lead to Western."

Western Walks-a-Thon Sept. 16

The Western Walks-a-Thon will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. The event is free and open to all employees and graduate assistants. A poker walk will be held and will include six stops. Walkers can start at any of five locations, including the Alumni House; Sherman Hall Auditorium, third floor; Memorial Hall, first floor lobby; University Union, Concourse; Horrabin Hall, room 117 and the dean's office of the College of Education and Human Services. Walkers can play their cards at the Spencer Student Recreation Center. Donations will also be collected for the Samaritan Well.

Curriculum and Instruction Open House Sept. 10

The second annual Curriculum and Instruction Open House will run from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 in Horrabin Hall, room 1. The 2015 Illinois Teacher of the Year, Steven Elza, will be the guest speaker.  

Representatives from several C&I outreach centers, student organizations and academic programs will hand out information and talk to attendees about the services the department has to offer to WIU and the community.

A tour of the new high tech Interactive Multimedia Lab in Horrabin Hall will be available. The lab offers graphics, video, computer and training services to WIU and to area community members.

Refreshments will be provided, and parking will be free in faculty/staff lots surrounding Horrabin Hall. All WIU faculty, staff and students are invited, as are all area teachers, educational professionals and anyone interested in learning more about the C&I department.

WIU Supply Chain Management Day Sept. 16

Western Illinois University's College of Business and Technology and the Department of Management and Marketing will host the 12th annual Supply Chain Management (SCM) Day Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The event is designed to foster interaction among employers, current and prospective SCM students and faculty and staff. The SCM Career Fair will be from noon-4:30 p.m. in the University Union Grand Ballroom. A dinner with employer representatives, students, faculty and staff will follow from 5-7 p.m.

Simien Named GBCC Director

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University has hired Carl Simien as the director of the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC). Simien is the former college and career director of the Umoja Student Development Corporation in Chicago.
