49er's Hold On Against Seahawks

A matchup that if it happened two years ago, very few viewers would have tuned in. But this Thursday, football fans from all over the country tuned in to watch the NFC West statement game. Rookie Russell Wilson led his Seahawks into Candlestick Park to take on Alex Smith and his high-powered 49er offense.

This wouldn’t have even been considered a contest a month ago, but the NFC West has been this NFL season’s biggest surprise. Arguably, it is the best division in the league due to the records throughout the division. No team is under .500 unlike every other division in the league.

The division is broken down like this.

San Francisco- 5 wins 2 losses

Arizona- 4 wins 2 losses

Seattle- 4 wins 3 losses

St. Louis- 3 wins 3 losses

Statement games are the most unpredictable of NFL events. With so much riding in one game, teams will often try new strategies to try to catch their opponents off guard. Thursday’s game proved to be pretty uneventful scoring wise for both teams. The biggest story was 49er running back Frank Gore who rushed for 182 yards from scrimmage before getting taken out in the final drive due to bruised ribs.

Seattle didn’t find their way into the end zone as the only scoring done from the Seahawks were two first half field goals. Running back Marshawn Lynch had a decent game as he rushed for 103 yards on 19 carries. Not an easy task for a running back when facing the 49ers shut down defensive line. A line that until last week against the Giants hadn’t allowed a running back to rush for 100 yards in twenty three straight games.

Seattle is okay after losing a tough game like this one. They are still above .500 and still have a pretty impressive track record with big wins over the Green Bay Packers earlier this season and the New England Patriots last Sunday. The NFC West crown will not be handed to the 49ers and it will be interesting to see who will win this tight knit division.
