Summer Music Institute 2014

"Study with the Masters" at Western Illinois University

 

The primary purpose of the Summer Music Institute at Western Illinois University is to provide the best possible educational opportunity to young people for individual development in the knowledge, practice, and appreciation of the fine art of music in a nurturing musical environment. Any returning camper receives a reduced camp fee!

Mike Fansler

SENIOR HIGH CONCERT BAND CAMP
Sunday, June 15-Saturday, June 21 • Cost - $490

Camp Director is Dr. Mike Fansler, director of bands at Western Illinois University. Seating auditions will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 15. Camp will include sectionals, technique classes, and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition, or chamber ensembles.  We will continue with our very successful whole-camp choir, conducted by Dr. James Stegall (Director of Choirs at WIU). All students from the SMI choir, band, orchestra and piano camp will meet for one hour each day to learn a piece or two for the final concert. This experience is both musically and socially important for our camp students!

Students are asked to prepare two pieces of contrasting style and major scales plus a chromatic scale.

Scale requirements in concert pitch are: C, G, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, and a two-octave chromatic scale.

All percussionists should be prepared to perform a piece they have prepared in advance of camp as well as the following rudiments on snare drum: single stroke roll, long roll, flam, ruff, paradiddle, Flam Accent #1, Accent #2, and Ratamaque.

For those attending both a Specialty Camp and the Senior High Concert Band Camp, see the application form for reduced fees. Camp will culminate in a final performance on June 21.

SENIOR HIGH VOCAL/CHORAL CAMP

Camp Director is Dr. James C. Stegall, Professor of Music, Western Illinois University. The Senior Vocal/Choral Camp is designed to challenge, encourage and inspire students of all proficiency levels by providing a wide range of instructional and performance opportunities. We will continue with our very successful whole-camp choir, conducted by Dr. James Stegall (Director of Choirs at WIU). All students from the SMI choir, band, orchestra and piano camp will meet for one hour each day to learn a piece or two for the final concert. This experience is both musically and socially important for our camp students!

Our master teachers help students explore choral repertoire selected from a wide variety of musical styles including the IMEA All-State selections.

Each day of camp is devoted to nurturing fundamental skills in music reading, vocal production, stage presence, diction, and basic musicianship through creative experiences in rehearsals, master classes, and special enrichment sessions.

Camp Director is Dr. Richard Hughey, Director of Orchestral Studies, Western Illinois University. All Senior High Concert Camps will include full sectional rehearsals, technique classes and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition or chamber ensembles. We will continue with our very successful whole-camp choir, conducted by Dr. James Stegall (Director of Choirs at WIU). All students from the SMI choir, band, orchestra and piano camp will meet for one hour each day to learn a piece or two for the final concert. All students are requested to prepare two pieces in contrasting styles, and the following major scales in three octaves: C, G, D, F and B-Flat.

SENIOR HIGH PIANO CAMP
Sunday, June 15-Saturday, June 21 • Cost - $490

Piano Camp will be team-taught by all three members of the WIU piano faculty: Dr. Tammie Walker and Dr. Jeff Brown (Classical), and Dr. Michael Stryker (Jazz). Students will receive daily private lessons as well as participate in technique classes, sight-reading classes, and small group experiences (chamber music, duets, accompanying, combos). In addition to the many performance and coaching opportunities at the keyboard, all piano campers will choose an elective course (conducting or music history) and will participate in the whole-camp choir, conducted by Dr. James Stegall (Director of Choirs at WIU). All students from the SMI choir, band, orchestra and piano camp will meet for one hour each day to learn a piece or two for the final concert. This experience is both musically and socially important for our camp students!

All piano camp students will play an audition for Drs. Walker, Brown and Stryker on Sunday afternoon, June 15. Pianists should prepare two pieces in contrasting styles as well as scales and arpeggios. All pianists will be asked to sightread as well.

WIU's Piano Camp is an intensive and extensive week where all students experience a well-rounded curriculum exploring both the classical and jazz mediums. It is the only camp in the region that offers such a wealth of information and instruction from three piano professors.
