JSO Tours with Simmerly
The Jazz Studio Orchestra, under the direction of John Cooper, director of jazz studies and professor of jazz trumpet in WIU’s School of Music, played a concert with trombonist Rick Simerly, on November 10 to cap off their annual high school tour November 7-9, 2011. The JSO performed with Simerly in the Quad Cities and the Chicago area.
And what a tour it was. NINE performances in three days!! And the band was on the road between each of those performances.
On Monday, November 7, the JSO performed at Moline High School at 10 a.m.; at Geneseo High School, at 2 p.m.; and at the River Music Experience (RME) Performance Hall, in Davenport, IA at 7 p.m. The RME performance included special guest River City 6, led by alumnus Steve Little, MM 2009.
That was followed by four performances on Wednesday, November 9: Naperville Central High School at 7:45 a.m.; Fenton Community High School in Bensenville at 1 p.m.; and finally the Jazz Showcase, Chicago, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., where they were joined with special guest WIU alumnus Robert Hanerhoff, BM 2005.
An associate professor of music at Milligan College in Tennessee, Simerly is a performing artist, educator and clinician. He is a faculty member of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, performs at jazz festivals, tours with jazz artists, big bands and small groups and has performed in 49 of 50 U.S. states as well as Europe, Canada and the Carribean. Simerly has played in with jazz legends and classic entertainers.
