Marching Leathernecks March for Hope
This season, the Marching Leathernecks have been engaged in raising funds for the ALS association’s local chapter. Through a program called, Marching for Hope, members of the marching band have been requesting and receiving donations this fall and dedicated their final performance at Hanson Field this year to the cause. All of the proceeds collected by the Marching Leathernecks, totaling several thousand dollars, went directly to the ALS association’s local chapter, ensuring that the community is directly benefited by the project.
On Saturday, November 20th, the Marching Leathernecks dedicated their half-time performance to Brent Whitmer, a 1989 WIU graduate, who passed away last year due to complications of ALS at the age of 49. Brent was the father of WIU cheerleader Jennifer Whitmer, sophomore, Geneseo, IL; WIU student Morgan Whitmer, freshman, Geneseo, IL; and husband of Marianne Whitmer, BOT 2007. Brent has three other children and two grandchildren, all of whom were present and recognized in front of the home crowd at half-time of the game.
