UTV’s Mark Dial Premieres Plain Folk
The documentary film, “Plain Folk,” by Mark Dial, filmmaker and associate director of Western Illinois University’s University Television will be shown at a free public screening at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall (Simpkins Hall).
With an interest in story, ethnography, everyday ritual, the mundane and time passing, I come to filmmaking. I begin my work through cultivating relationships with my participants. I live and work in rural mid-America. I approach my film practice with intense curiosity and am aware to the extent that my presence with the camera does interfere in their daily lives. I honor our agreement to simply spend time together. I photograph the breezy back porch, houses of worship, and the dinner table with long slow acts of observation and compassion. Stories are told directly and indirectly.
