First Ever Community Music Day
WIU’s very first Community Music Day occurred on Saturday May, 8th from 2:00-5:00 in Browne Hall. This was a collaborative effort among student organizations, faculty, staff, and the Community Music School to bring community youth in grades k-7 to campus to experience music in different ways. Dr. Richard Cangro, music education faculty and Anna Smith, music education/piano major coordinated activities that ran concurrently throughout the day. Children participated in drum circles, music making games, an instrument petting zoo, an organ demonstration, as well as performances by the WIU Chamber Orchestra, the Youth String Orchestra, Opera Express, and a student jazz combo. The event raised money for summer camp scholarships and will become an annual event showcasing the School of Music.
