Comm Alum Verbeck Authors Book
Alumni Erin Verbeck, summa cum laude BA ‘00, University Honors Scholar and former track and cross country athlete, recently co-authored a small business book, Worth Every Penny: Build a Business that Thrills and Still Charge What You’re Worth. The book was #4 in The New York Times Book Review on May 13, 2012. The book was also listed #1 on the USA Today’s Money Best Sellers list and #2 on the Wall Street Journal Hardcover Business Best-Selling Book list for the week that ended April 29, 2012.
Worth Every Penny is a marketing book that teaches small businesses a radically different way to run a small business that doesn’t rely on getting into slash-and-burn price wars with your competitors. It was inspired by the boutique photography studio of Verbeck’s co-author, Sarah Petty, whose business was named one most profitable photography studios in the country by Professional Photographers of America after just 5 years in business.
Verbeck and her co-author are business partners at The Joy of Marketing where they teach small business owners how they can implement a boutique business model and stop competing on price.
Upon graduating from the Western Illinois University in 2000, BA Communication, Verbeck began her career at a top regional advertising industry directing the marketing campaigns of small businesses in the publishing, travel and tourism, beauty and retail industries.
After earning her MBA from the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University while serving as an assistant track and field and cross country coach, she spent 3 years in brand marketing at Sabre Holdings in Southlake, Texas, the parent company of Travelocity. At Sabre, Verbeck directed the marketing campaigns of several of the top business-to-business travel brands.
In 2009, her longtime mentor and co-author, Sarah Petty, recruited her to run The Joy of Marketing. Since Verbeck joined the business in 2009, the company has tripled in gross revenue.
Verbeck currently resides in Robinson, Texas with her husband, Chris Verbeck, BS ’00.
This story was reported by another WIU alum–Becky Mast, BB 2010. Becky is working for Joy of Marketing. Congratulations to both WIU grads.
