Kate Pohlpeter has been a WIU faculty member since 1994, and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in acquired language, speech, and cognition disorders. She also teaches courses in dysphagia. Ms Pohlpeter has served as the undergraduate academic advisor during her tenure, and is the Illinois Centennial Honors College advisor for the department. In addition to teaching, she supervises clinical students at a nursing home in Macomb, as well as supervising students with clients who have had strokes and head injuries in the WIU Speech Language Hearing Clinic. Ms Pohlpeter has earned certification for VitalStim therapy, and is a registered provider of that program in the western Illinois region. She has presented therapy techniques and case studies on developmental apraxia at a variety of conferences, and has presented studies on the efficacy of using intermediate care facilities as practicum placements before internship for graduate students.
After graduating with a Master’s degree from WIU, Ms Pohlpeter worked for regional hospitals and provided services on acute rehabilitation floors, skilled nursing centers, outpatient facilities, and home health programs. She continues to work and consult with area hospitals and nursing homes with management of dysphagia and dementia.
