Dr. Richard Cangro, Director

2014-2015 - Musical happenings at the WIU Community Music School

The WIU Community Music School is thriving with students of all ages learning to express themselves and thoroughly enjoy music to the fullest! Since our opening in January 2009, the program has exploded with a flurry of fabulous music opportunities for singers, instrumentalists, and pre-school kids. Each year a new program has been added. This year our newest musical opportunity is the adult piano program called Recreational Music Making. Recreational Music Making (RMM) is defined as "A new strategy for enabling people who never before considered themselves musical to discover the joy and wellness benefits of playing a musical instrument." Designed for adult beginners, this class piano program focuses on student goals rather than teacher goals, and uses a flexible curriculum that is encouraging and self-paced. Learning piano is a journey, not a race! Classes will be on Saturdays from 10-11AM in the piano lab in Browne Hall at the WIU School of Music. Registration is open online on the CMS website below.

CMS is continuing our fabulous music program for pre-school aged children and their parents called Family Music Classes. The early years of life are so crucial for establishing a foundation for lifelong music development. Family Music Classes at the Community Music School bring musical playtime activities to life, teaching you and your child how to sing together in class and at home. Openings for all of our programs are filling up fast! Sign up now to get in on the musical action!!

Other opportunities at the Community Music School include private lessons for guitar, voice, organ, and piano. Two string orchestra programs are open for experienced string students. Our programs are staffed with teachers who are exceptionally qualified as well as brilliant performers. Our goal is to provide the highest quality instruction through artistic modeling and knowledgeable pedagogy.

Information and registration available for specific programs found on tabs to the left of this page.
