Justin received his bachelor's degree in Music Education from Knox College in June of 2005. As a student at Knox, Justin played lead alto in the jazz ensemble and guitar and bass in the top combo. As a post-baccalaureate student, Justin played trombone in the jazz ensemble to further his brass performance skills. He composed and arranged a variety of music for all ensembles and was recognized at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival, the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Festival, the University of Louisville Jazz Festival, and the Western Illinois University Jazz Festival as an outstanding soloist and composer.

Many of his compositions have been performed by the Knox College Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz Train, the Ashland University Jazz Ensemble, and the Knox-Sandburg Concert Band. One of his charts, "I've Gone Crazy," was debuted at the Rootabaga Jazz Festival featuring Greg Osby on alto saxophone. While at Knox College, Justin was the recipient of the Ruth Lockwood-Goodsill Prize for outstanding composition, and the David Lowry Jazz Award for outstanding representation of the jazz program.

As an educator, Justin has served as band director in the Stockton Community School District, the ROWVA School District, and the Galesburg School District respectively. He has served as the 5-12 band director as well as the general music teacher at the K-6 level. His duties have included directing the marching band, concert band, wind symphony, pep band, jazz band and combo. His marching bands, jazz bands and combos have received extremely high recognition at various competitions state-wide. He received the KFM Teacher of the Year award at ROWVA High School in 2008 and National Honor Society Teacher of the Year award in 2011. During his tenure in the public schools, Justin has adjudicated the IESA Solo/Ensemble Contest, IESA Organizational Contest, IMEA Rhythm Section Auditions and Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival Auditions. He has also taught private lessons through the Williamsfield School District and Kidder Music. Currently, Justin is a member of the Knox College Music Department Adjunct faculty where he teaches jazz saxophone, jazz guitar, jazz bass and basic improvisation skills. Justin also directs the Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival Alumni Band every spring.

In his spare time, Justin enjoys performing in his 70's rock/funk band the Lubricats. As a performer, he can be seen in a variety of local jazz ensembles, rock bands, and community bands in the Galesburg area. In the fall, Justin will pursue his Master's Degree in Jazz Composition from Western Illinois University and hopes to direct a jazz studies program at the college level in the future.
