Jasmine Garcia, M.A.
324 Sallee Hall
Jasmine Garcia, an Emmy award-winning technical director, came to Western Illinois University in the fall of 2012. She brings a strong background in television production and news writing to the department.
Jasmine earned her Master of Arts in Journalism & Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she also taught courses in television production. While in grad school, she started her broadcasting career at KVVU FOX5, working in production. It wasn’t long before she received the highest achievement in her field, awarded the Emmy for outstanding technical director for the March 2008 broadcast of Speedway Saturday Night by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Jasmine taught broadcasting at West Liberty University in West Virginia for two years and then moved back into the field, working as the producer of NEWS9 Sunrise, a popular two-hour morning show at WTOV9 in Steubenville, Ohio. In May 2012, WTOV9 became the highest rated NBC TV station in the country for people ages 25-54, making the station number one out of 217 NBC affiliated TV stations in America.
Jasmine’s technical experience, coupled with her producing background, is an asset in the classroom, where she is working one-on-one with student producers, reporters and directors to put together successful newscasts.
