Department of Art - Degrees Offered
The Department of Art offers two baccalaureate degrees:
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Art Options in Art Studio, Graphic Design, and Teacher Education. Art Studio Option is for the professional artist and provides an in-depth, comprehensive and structured background in the fine arts. It allows the student to focus on their chosen studio area for the development of conceptual focus and exceptional technical proficiency. Tracks of studio specialization include: ceramics, drawing, metals/jewelry, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Students from this program are required to complete a BFA Senior Exhibition and graduate with a well-defined personal and professional portfolio. Graphic Design Option is for the design professional and provides an in-depth, comprehensive, and structured background in Graphic Design. This degree focuses on creative graphic form and communication, design processes, cultural factors, and offers the most thorough experience of artistic Graphic Design at the undergraduate level. Students from this program are required to complete a Senior Portfolio and will graduate with a well-defined professional portfolio website. Teacher Education Option is an education degree based on the professional degree in the visual arts. This program combines general art studio courses with coursework from the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) and courses in Art Education methods, theory, and research which enables students to develop the range of knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to teach art at the K-12 levels. This degree prepares students to earn K-12 teacher certification in the State of Illinois.
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art Options in Art Studio and Graphic Design. The Bachelor of Arts degree is a broad, well-rounded liberal arts degree that is intended for students who desire an in-depth Studio Art or Graphic Design specialization with a more open educational program. The flexibility of this degree allows students to pursue Studio Art or Graphic Design alongside another field(s) of academic study if they choose to do so. Students have the possibility to select a minor or a group of related courses with the assistance of their faculty advisor. Honors Curriculum — Academically qualified students in this department are encouraged to complete an honors curriculum in University Honors, Departmental Honors, or General Honors. All Honors students must complete the one-hour honors colloquium (GH 299). General Honors includes General Honors coursework. Departmental Honors includes honors work in the major. University Honors combines Departmental and General Honors. Integrated Baccalaureate and Master's Degree Program — An integrated baccalaureate and master's degree program is available for the Bachelor of Arts in Art: Master of Arts in Museum Studies. An integrated baccalaureate and master's degree program is available for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art: Master of Arts in Museum Studies. An integrated degree program provides the opportunity for outstanding undergraduates to earn both degrees in five years.
