Teacher and Professional Education History
Western Illinois University was established in 1899 as the Western Illinois State Normal School. Teacher preparation was the first official program, and its first students graduated in 1903 (Hursh, 1927). For more than a century, Western Illinois University has prepared educators for positions throughout the country and around the world. Although the majority of our graduates have accepted positions as teachers, educators from the WIU’s Teacher and Professional Education Program have also prepared other school professionals as educational leaders, school counselors, school psychologists, and communicative disorders specialists.
