RPTA 450(G). Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking

Fee: Approximately $145 which includes travel, permits, rental, lodging and meals while in the wilderness area.
Additional Costs and Materials: Personal clothing, sleeping bag, pad, and meals on route.

This travel study course covers essentials of kayaking for outdoor education, adventure recreation, therapeutic recreation and eco tourism professionals. Fundamental skills and safety are taught in an American Canoe Association - Introduction to Kayaking workshop at Spring Lake Saturday, September 1 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Risk management, tour planning, logistics, and wilderness management are addressed in five required class meetings and during the nine day travel workshop to the Apostle Islands National Lake Shore September 15 - 23, 2012. Padding through and camping on the islands, we will visit lighthouses, sea caves, view wildlife and National Park Service Interpretation programs that address the Lake Superior ecosystem and its economic, historical and cultural heritage. Students must pass a swim test and supply appropriate personal clothing, sleeping bag, pad, and meals on route. Completion qualifies you to enroll in the ACA Level 1 Kayak Instructor Certification course in October.

Dr. Doh takes students to several premium tourism attractions in Chicago such as Soldier Field, Navy Pier, and Chicago Office of Tourism & Culture. At the site visits, the students will meet with facility personnel for guided tours and discussions about destination/attraction promotion as well as event planning. This travel workshop will meet 3 times throughout the semester (twice before and once after the trip).

The American Canoe Association Level 1 Kayak Instructor Certification course offered the weekend of October 12-14, 2012 at Spring Lake. Open to any WIU students who have completed an ACA Introduction to Paddling - Kayak class through the Student Recreation Center, RPTA Apostle Islands travel study, or ECOEE program. Instructor development Workshop and Instructor Certification Examination fee is $140 in addition to one hour of WIU tuition. Only ten spots on this course!

This is a new experimental course which serves as a major elective for RPTA students. Put tools in your recreation leadership toolbox! Expand your skills using the performing arts for group recreational programs! From icebreakers, mixers, social (not new) games, leading casual singing, playing ukulele for accompaniment, square dancing & calling, to improvisation, skits and informal drama. What can you lead? Enrollment is limited to 20 students.
