SFC Josh C. Abernathy joined active service on 5 Jan 2003. He completed OSUT at Fort Sill, OK on 17 April 2003. On 17 May 2003, SFC Abernathy reported to Yongsan, Korea where he completed one year as a Fire Team Leader with the United Nations Command Honor Guard.

After his tour in Korea SFC Abernathy reported to Fort Carson, CO where he was assigned to 2-32 FA 3BDE 4th ID on 15 June 2004. On 01 December SFC Abernathy was assigned to 1-8 IN after the Unit of Actions took effect. While in 1-8 IN SFC Abernathy served as a Platoon RTO, FO, Company Fire Support Team Chief, and the Battalion Targeting NCO.  

From December 2005 to December 2006, SFC Abernathy deployed to Iraq in support of OIF IV and was stationed at FOB Paliwoda, Balad. He returned to Iraq again from December 2007 to February 2009 in support of OIF VII-IX and was stationed at FOB Marez, Mosul. In June of 2009 SFC Abernathy attended the United States Army Drill Sergeant School; He was awarded the Drill Sergeant Badge and completed two years as a Basic Combat Instructor at D Co 3-34 IN, Fort Jackson, SC. 

When his Drill tour was complete in October 2011 SFC Abernathy, reported to Fort Riley, KS. He served as the 1-28 IN Targeting NCO with 4/1 ID. He deployed to Afghanistan with 1-28 IN and was stationed at FOB Orgun-E from May 2012 – February 2013. After his deployment, SFC Abernathy served as the BN Effects NCO for 1-28 IN until being assigned to United State Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Fort Sill, OK. in June of 2014. While assigned to the NCO Academy he served as the senior instructor for the 13F Advanced Leaders Course.

SFC Abernathy was reassigned to Western Illinois University in August of 2015 where he currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Science.  He has a 7 Year old Son named Logan William. SFC Abernathy has completed WLC, ALC, SLC, and Airborne School; His Awards include:  BSM, 2 MSM, ARCOM w/V device, 8 ARCOM, 3 AAM, 4 AGCM, NDSM, KDSM, ACM-CS, 4 ICM-CS, GWTSM, 3 NOPDR, ASR, 5 OSR, NATOMDL, DSIDBAD, PRCHTBAD, ABIB and CAB.
