Professor Swanson is an Associate Instructor for the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration at Western Illinois University.  Having earned degrees from Elgin Community College in Fire Science and Safety, Bachelors in Science in Fire Service Management from Southern Illinois University and a Masters degree from Benedictine University in Management and Organizational Behavior. 

Professor Swanson started his fire service career in high school as a fire cadet.  Upon graduating transitioned to a Paid-on-call firefighter while attending community college.  Shortly after graduating with an Associates degree he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a firefighter serving in Washington D.C., Goose Bay, Canada, King Salmon, Alaska and finally in Rantoul, Illinois as a Fire Instructor for the Technical Training School.  Professor Swanson began his civilian career as a firefighter and progressing through the ranks of lieutenant and retiring as a Battalion Chief in charge of EMS, Maintenance and special events for the department. 

Throughout his teaching career, Professor Swanson encourages students to blend the classroom learning with practical experience.  The combination of these two components better prepares the student for the real-world situations they will encounter.
