Required Exams

Department of Kinesiology Exams

Content Knowledge Exams:

  1. KIN 168 - A pre-test of physical education content knowledge in the five core classes: KIN 270, KIN 290, KIN 359, KIN 391, and KIN 392;  administered during the first year in the program.  Teacher candidates register for KIN 168 to take this test. Grading is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory (S/U).
  2. KIN 468 - A post-test of physical education content knowledge in the five core classes: KIN 270, KIN 290, KIN 359, KIN 391, and KIN 392;  administered during the final year in the program.  Teacher candidates register for KIN 468 to take this test. Grading is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory (S/U) and students must receive a minimum score of 70 to successfully complete the requirement.

Physical Fitness Tests

A health related physical fitness assessment must be completed at the following points:

  1. KIN 167 - During the first year all physical education majors must satisfactorily complete the fitness test.  Majors register for KIN 167 to take this test.  Grading is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory (S/U). Students complete a mile run, curl-up test, modified sit-and-reach test, and a choice of upper body strength test from the flexed arm hand, pull-ups, or bench-press tests.

    Target performance standards are:  Mile run: Males = 7:01-8:30 min.; Females = 8:01-10:00 min.
    Curl-ups: M=24-47; F=18-35
    Pull-ups: M=5-7; F=1
    Flexed Arm Hang: M=15-20 sec.; F=8-12 sec.
    1RM Bench Press: M=96% of body wt.; F=58% of body wt.
    Sit-and-Reach: M=8”; F=12”. 
    Acceptable performance standards are:  Mile run: Males = 7:01-8:30 min.; Females = 8:01-10:00 min.
    Curl-ups: M=24-47; F=18-35

    Flexed Arm Hang: M=15-20 sec.; F=8-12 sec.

  2. KIN 467 - During the final year all majors must satisfactorily complete the fitness test.  The assessment consists of four tests from the FitnessGram and a blood pressure screening.  Majors must meet departmental criteria for the tests.  Majors register for KIN 467.  Grading is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory (S/U).  Students complete a mile run, curl-up test, modified sit-and-reach test, and a choice of upper body strength test from the flexed arm hand, pull-ups, or bench-press tests.

    Target performance standards are:  Mile run: Males = 7:01-8:30 min.; Females = 8:01-10:00 min.

Teacher Education Program Exams

The following exams are required by the TEP and administered by the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) must be completed:

  1. The Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills must be passed and test results confirmed and on file in HH91 in order to be admitted to the teacher education program.

  2. The ICTS Test of Content Knowledge by June 1 (fall student teachers) or December 1 (spring student teachers) for clearance to student teaching. Registration booklets and study guides for the content-area tests are available  at the ICTS website and in the CPEP/ Advising Center Horrabin Hall 91.
  3. The Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) exam.  The exam covers the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, the Core Language Arts Standards for all teachers, the Computer Technology Standards, and the new Special Education Standards for the regular classroom teacher. Candidates are required to take and pass this test prior to or during the student teaching semester. Candidates need to confirm that the passing results of the APT test are on file with CPEP for a passing evaluation in student teaching.  Students who complete student teaching but fail the APT exam, will receive an Incomplete in student teaching.
