Ronald Pettigrew is an academic advisor at Western Illinois University within the School of Distance Learning and Outreach. Ronald also serves as a military chaplain, his present assignment being the Battalion Chaplain within the 4th Marine Division for the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines. Additionally, he serves as a chaplain to WIU’s football team and Christian Faith Campus Ministry. He received his bachelor of arts in international relations from the University of Southern California (1987), master of divinity in urban ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois (1996), and master of science from Western Illinois University in college student personnel (2009).
Ronald has over twenty five years of military experience through counseling and training men and women. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Far East, Near East and Pacific as a Naval Officer and Chaplain. He has had multiple deployments and tours in combat and has worked for eight years as a Pastor in multicultural and urban settings. Within student affairs, he has worked as a Resident Hall Advisor and Director, Graduate Advisor in the Multicultural Center and Provost's Office and as a Peer Mentor Coordinator. His men’s development interest lies in mentoring and facilitating social justice and programs that empower men, particularly those who have served our country or those underserved or disenfranchised by it or our present academic process and structure.
Academically, he has assisted in teaching African American Studies, Theology, Effective Communication, Conflict Resolution, Research and Mediation Courses, and specialized in Urban, Intercultural and College Student Personnel courses. As a result of his military training, experiences and assignments, he also regularly serves as a facilitator for Returning Warrior Workshops and Marriage Relationship Retreats as well as being a certified trainer in Combat Operation Stress Control, Family Wellness and Critical Incident Stress Debriefings. Through these experiences, Ronald has developed an awareness and sensitivity toward male privilege and challenging societal expectations of men, which he uses to help men reach their full academic potential.
