Master of Science in Education - M.S.Ed.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) degree in educational leadership requires a minimum of 33 semester hours (24 or more in educational leadership from Western Illinois University) to be selected in consultation with the student's adviser, if approved by the Graduate Committee. The student may earn licensure in K-12 administration (Type 75) after completing the degree program. The State of Illinois requires of those enrolling in principal preparation programs to have completed two years of teaching prior to enrollment.

Courses required of all M.S. Ed. degree candidates:

  • EDL 500 Leadership Development: 3 sh
  • EDL 504 Leading the Core Curriculum: 3 sh
  • EDL 508 School Leadership and Technology: 3 sh
  • EDL 510 Data for School Leaders: 3 sh
  • EDL 515 Fundamentals of School Law: 3 sh
  • EDL 520 Leadership for Special Needs: 3 sh
  • EDL 525 Integrating Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment: 3 sh
  • EDL 528 Supervision of Instruction: 3 sh
  • EIS 500 Methods of Research or LEJA 503 Research Methodology in Criminal Justice (may be substituted for EIS 500 with permission of EDL department chair): 3 sh

*Electives to be selected in consultation with the student’s adviser: 6 sh

Administrative Licensure

Persons seeking a principal endorsement on an administrative license through Western Illinois University must have a master’s degree or complete the master’s degree in Educational Leadership. The principal preparation program includes the following: 36 semester hours of course work and EDL 555 (Internship).

  • EDL 555 Principal Internship (4)

Internship

Successful completion of an internship is required for administrative certification as principal (EDL 555) and for superintendent (EDL 655). In both cases, the internship is taken for two semester hours of credit in Fall and Spring semesters or in Spring and Fall semesters, for a total of four credit hours over the two semesters. A minimum of 75 clock hours of planned activity is required for each semester hour of credit. Internships are carried out under the supervision of a school administrator and a faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership.
