WIU Science Education Conference
Local Elementary Teacher Recognized for Excellence
During WIU Science Education Conference on Friday, April 15th over 150 science educators meet on the WIU Macomb Campus to update their science teaching skills at the 25th Annual PreK-8 Science Update Conference. The conference offered the teachers a choice of fourteen fifty-minute sessions covering topics from butterflies to plants, engineering to mathematics, and forensics science to literature. Participants also had the opportunity to attend up to nine mini-sessions focusing on a variety of topics from bats, to soda pop, to constructing your own laboratory equipment. The conference was hosted by the Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the College of Education and Human Services.
At the conference luncheon the Maurice G. Kellogg Award for Excellence in Science Teaching was awarded to Julie Ann Bice. Ms. Bice is an elementary teacher at West Prairie Middle School in Colchester. She has a BS in Elementary Education from Quincy College and a MS in Elementary Education from WIU. She is also an adjunct elementary education literacy instructor at Monmouth College. Julie Ann is known locally for her environmental activities such as creating butterfly gardens throughout the region.
