Religious Studies

Students may complete an honors curriculum in University Honors, Upper Division Honors, or Lower Division Honors. All Honors students must complete the one-hour honors colloquium (GH 299). Lower Division Honors includes General Honors coursework. Upper Division Honors includes honors work in the major. University Honors combines Upper and Lower Division Honors.

Honors students in Religious Studies must complete all requirements for a major in Religious Studies.

Grade Requirements

  • 3.4 overall GPA
  • 3.4 GPA in Honors courses

Lower Division Honors Requirements

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (3 semester hours) (a General Honors seminar may be substituted in some cases)
  • GH 299 (one semester hour)

Upper Division Honors Requirements

  • GH 299
  • In-course Honors: 6 upper-level semester hours in departmental honors in Religious Studies (to be taken as in-course honors, not including Rel 499H or 490H)
  • Thesis: 6 semester hours or thesis credits, consisting of 3 semester hours of Rel 499H (Independent Study related to Honors Bachelor’s Thesis) and 3 semester hours of Rel 490H (Honor’s Bachelor Thesis in Religious Studies).

University Honors

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (in some cases a General Honors seminar may be substituted)
  • GH 299
  • 12 upper-level semester hours of honors courses in Religious Studies, which must include 6 hours of in-course honors, 3 semester hours of Rel 499H (Independent Study related to Honors Bachelor’s Thesis) and 3 semester hours of Rel 490H (Honor’s Bachelor Thesis in Religious Studies).
