Foreign Languages & Literatures

Students may complete an honors curriculum in University Honors, Upper Division Honors, or Lower Division Honors. All Honors students must complete the onehour honors colloquium (GH 299). Lower Division Honors includes General Honors coursework. Upper Division Honors includes honors work in the major. University Honors combines Upper and Lower Division Honors.

Honors students in Foreign Languages and Literature must complete all requirements for a major in Foreign Languages and Literatures. Thirty four (34) semester hours in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literaturse are required for a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Grade Requirements

  • 3.4 overall GPA
  • 3.5 GPA in either French or Spanish

Lower Division Honors Requirements

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (3 semester hours) (a General Honors seminar may be substituted in some cases)
  • GH 299 (one semester hour)

Upper Division Honors Requirements

  • GH 299
  • 12 semester hours of in course honors in the student’s primary major degree program (French or Spanish) in the Department. All 300 and 400 level courses in either French or Spanish may be taken as in course honors. No less than 6 semester hours must be completed at the 400 level. Departmental honors courses will help fulfill requirements for a major.

University Honors

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (in some cases a General Honors seminar may be substituted)
  • GH 299
  • 12 semester hours of in course honors in the student’s primary major degree program (French or Spanish), 6 semester hours must be 400 level.
