Curriculum and Instruction

Students may complete an honors curriculum in University Honors, Upper Division Honors, or Lower Division Honors. All Honors students must complete the one-hour honors colloquium (GH 299). Lower Division Honors includes General Honors coursework. Upper Division Honors includes honors work in the major. University Honors combines Upper and Lower Division Honors.

The C&I departmental requirements for Honors represents a progressive honors plan beginning in the sophomore year and culminating with a capstone seminar during the student teaching semester of the senior year. Honors students will have an opportunity to explore issues and ideas in the field of education; identify and develop areas of interest in the methods courses of the junior year; extend an area of interest in the methods courses of the senior year; and participate in an interactive seminar during the student teaching semester of the senior year. The broad objectives of the honors experience is the mastery of pertinent academic and professional knowledge; the acquisition of appropriate written, oral, research and technological skills; the development of critical, analytical, creative, and reflective abilities; the cultivation of interpersonal and leadership capabilities; and an enhanced ability to make connections between classroom experiences and real world situations.

Grade Requirements

  • 3.4 overall GPA
  • 3.4 GPA in Honors courses

Lower Division Honors Requirements

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (3 semester hours) (a General Honors seminar may be substituted in some cases)
  • GH 299 (one semester hour)

Upper Division Honors Requirements (ELED)

  • GH 299
  • ELED 445 (2 hours) to be taken spring semester sophomore year
  • One of the following as in course honors: SSED 365, SCED 364, Math 364, RDG 383
  • One of the following as in course honors: SSED 495, RDG 384, C&I 476
  • One of the following as in course honors: SCED 464, Math 366, RDG 433
  • ELED 410 (1 hour) to be taken during student teaching

Upper Division Honors Requirements (ECH)

  • GH 299
  • ELED 445 (2 hours) to be taken spring semester sophomore year
  • One of the following as in course honors: ECH 351, ECH 353, RDG 382
  • One of the following as in course honors: SCED 353, SSED 352, RDG 383, Math 362
  • One of the following as in course honors: ECH 474, C&I 476, RDG 432
  • ECH 410 (1 hour) to be taken during student teaching

University Honors

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (in some cases a General Honors seminar may be substituted)
  • GH 299
  • 2 semester hours of ELED 445 (Department Honors Seminar)
  • 9 hours of in course honors in ELED or ECH
  • 1 semester hour of ELED 410 or ECH 410 (during student teaching)
