Physics in the Fast Lane: Laser Science at One Trillionth of A second or Less

Abstract:  The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to laser science and ultrafast optical pulses. In this talk, I will discuss the great work of this year’s winners and also our recent progress toward applying these techniques to achieve quantum control in several systems of current focus including superconductors, photovoltaics and topological matter. Finally, I will discuss far-reaching consequences of these results and future quantum matter discovery.

About the speaker:  Dr. Jigang Wang, Ames Laboratory of US Department of Energy and Department of Physics & Astronomy, Iowa State University Dr. Jigang Wang currently is F. Wendell Miller professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Iowa State University and staff scientist in Ames laboratory of US Department of Energy. He received his Ph.D. from Rice University at 2005, joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow from 2005-2008, and then settled at Iowa State University since 2008. His research broadly concerns with non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, ultrafast spectroscopy and nano-imaging of complex materials. He is recipient of the NSF CAREER award and lead PI of the M.W.Keck Award on Quantum Microscopy.

Compton Effect Experiment and My Early Physics Education

Abstract:  Arthur Holly Compton was a renowned American physicist who first rose to fame with his famous revolutionary discovery of the Compton Effect for which he also won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This discovery confirmed the dual nature of electromagnetic radiation as both a wave and a particle. I will describe in simple terms, “the Compton Effect” experiment that I had performed in my undergraduate junior year at the University of Illinois and its profound in influence and impression on me. It greatly inspired me, and Duality of nature was imprinted on my mind. Arthur H. Compton’s birthday was celebrated on September 10 and this is partly a celebration of this great American Physicist.

About the speaker:  Professor Yan Lwin is an emeritus Professor of Physics at the Department of Physics, Western Illinois University. He studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and conducted research at the Argonne National Laboratory before joining WIU.
