Program Overview

In 2007, the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved Western Illinois University’s (WIU) request to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program. The program served registered nurses who had completed an associate degree or a three-year diploma program in nursing. The RN-BSN Completion program will add to enhance the registered nurses’ basic knowledge of the nursing profession and provide them with the educational background for career advancement. In 2008, IBHE approved WIU’s request to offer a pre-licensure nursing program as part of the BSN degree. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, on recommendation of the Illinois Board of Nursing, approved the pre-licensure nursing program at WIU in March 2009. The Baccalaureate program received its 5-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education effective February 22, 2010.

Several organizations participated in the development of the program including Blessing-Reiman College of Nursing, Carl Sandburg College, Graham Hospital School of Nursing, John Wood Community College, McDonough District Hospital, and Spoon River College.
