Math Club For next week's Math Club meeting, Dr. Tasdan will be giving a talk on estimating correlation coefficients under monotone and non-monotone associations. Our meeting will be at 5:30pm on Zoom, November 18th.

On Saturday, February 22nd, we hosted the ICTM High School math competition. 180 students from 7 HS participated. Our Math Activities room as well as hands-on experiences at the recruiting tables were a hit! Thanks to everyone who made this year's ICTM a success!

AMC 10/12 competition:  WIU’s Department of Mathematics held the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) American Mathematics Competition contest on the WIU campus on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 from 4:00 – 5:00 PM in Morgan Hall Room 224, Macomb, IL.

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. This contest provides an opportunity for high school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of competitions that eventually lead all the way to the International Mathematical Olympiad.

WIU Associate Professor of Mathematics Boris Petracovici presented his "Last Lecture" titled, "Lifelong Lessons: What Learning Math Taught Me, and What I Learned from Teaching Math." Date: Thursday, November 7, 2019, Time: 7:00 p.m., Place: 109 Morgan Hall.

AMC 8 Middle School Contest. WIU’s Department of Mathematics offered the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) American Mathematics Competitions contest on the WIU campus at NO CHARGE for middle school students. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. The  33rd Annual Mary Olive Woods lecture  was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, in the WIU Union Grand Ballroom. Andrea Jain, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, presented "Peace, Loge, Yoga: The Politics of Global Spirituality". The lecture was free and open to the public.

68th Annual WIU Mathematics Teachers' ConferenceApril 12, 2019.

Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary School is excited to be holding its third annual STEAM Night (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) on Thursday, April 11, 2019 from 5:30-7pm at Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary School.Dr. Kim Hartweg and her WIU students have entered a task called Marble Mania, where kids will use various objects to try to keep a marble moving for as long as possible. Participants will collect data and may create stem and leaf plots depending on the age.  

Math Club Meeting:  Dr. Elizabeth Hansen, Associate Professor from the Department of Mathematics and Philosophy at Western Illinois University, gave a presentation about the Elo Rating system and how fivethirtyeight.com uses it, along with Monte Carlo simulations, to predict the outcome of March Madness. WIU hosted the ICTM Regional Mathematics Contest on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Area high schools competed from 9:00-3:00 in Morgan Hall.

Math Club Meeting: Dr. Fedor Andreev, professor from the Department of Mathematics and Philosophy at Western Illinois University, explained some possible physics explanations for phenomena in The World of Ice and Fire. The 32nd Annual Mary Olive Woods Lecture was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, in the WIU Union Heritage Room. Timothy O'Connor, Professor of Philosophy at Indiana University, presented "Can It Be Reasonable and Moral to Believe in One True Religion?" The lecture was free and open to the public.

Math Club Meeting: Dr. Molly Homer, Advisor from the WIU Centennial Honors College, was the guest speaker. She discussed how math has been an important tool for her throughout three distinct careers since graduating from college. Pizza and drinks were served.

ACT Prep Course: Presented by the Math Club. A one hour session to review sample problems from the math portion of the ACT, and to discuss general problem solving strategies to help boost your ACT score. Cost included the one hour course and a packet of sample problems to study at home. Everyone was welcome to attend, including high school students preparing for the exam.

Wednesday,  November 5  at 5:30 in Morgan 208 -  Math Club meeting . WIU Mathematics graduate student Amanda Meiners presented on π. This talk was specific for those focusing on math education but was an interesting learning experience for everyone. Cookies and drinks were served.

Math Club -    Wednesday,   October 8th,  Morgan 202, 5:30pm, free pizza! Dr. Dinesh Ekanayake (Dr. D) presented "WIU Math Graduate Programs: Masters and Integrated." This talk was great for undergraduate math majors of all levels!

Math Club -  Wednesday,&nbspSeptember 24th,  Morgan 202, 5:30pm, free pizza! Dr. Amy Ekanayake (Dr. E) presented "New Option for Math Majors: Careers, Paths to Prepare, and Possible Double Majoring." Everyone was welcome, but the talk was primarily for freshmen and sophomores. Upper-level undergraduate math majors also found it useful, due to the career information.
