Departmental Scholarships
The following scholarships are available. Please consult the Departmental Administrative Staff for further details and please give consideration to applying.
- The Vivian D. Kline Scholarship for New Freshmen
- Foreign Languages and Literatures - Arts and Sciences
- Must have completed a minimum of two years of high school foreign language instruction with a minimum GPA for such coursework of 3.5.
- A minimum ACT of 25 is normally required for eligibility, but may be waived in cases where the scholarship committee believes there is significant evidence of academic achievement from other sources.
- Must declare a major in degree program offered by the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department upon enrollment at WIU and enroll in a foreign language course at the appropriate level (as determined by transcript evaluation and/or placement exam) during the first semester of attendance at WIU.
- Applicants must complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans.
The Vivian D. Kline Scholarship for Current Students
- Must have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
- Must have completed at least 6 semester hours of coursework in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
- Must have a minimum BPA of 3.5 for coursework taken in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department.
- Applicants must complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans.

The Clifford A. and Rosa Julstrom Scholarship

The Foreign Languages Alumni Scholarship

GPA, ACT, Year in School: ACT of 25 or above,25% class rank, entering freshman
Major, Other Requirements: Foreign Language Major

Award Amount: $1000 ($250 for four scholars)

The Foreign Languages and Literature Western Opportunity Scholarship

The Jerry Purdum Memorial Scholarship in French
Foreign Languages and Literatures - Arts and Sciences -
GPA, ACT, Year in School: Must be full-time student, any class-freshman through senior; New freshman must have 25 or higher ACT and continuing students must have 3.0 or higher GPA
Major, Other Requirements: Preference will be given to incoming new freshman students
