January 27: English Honor Society Wins International Award

October 29: Kelsey McGuire, English education major and member of the Centennial Honors College and Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, was the inaugural recipient of the Jack and Dorothy Bates Jessee Scholarship. Her award was presented by Dr. Tim Helwig at the College of Arts & Sciences scholarship dinner on Saturday, October 29, 2011. Here's what Dr. Helwig had to say about Kelsey.

I nominated Kelsey because she is an exceptionally talented, earnest, and driven young woman. I had the pleasure of teaching Kelsey last spring in Critical Methods of Reading and Writing, the gateway course to the English major in which students are introduced to and practice a variety of theoretical approaches to literature. A sophomore who had only recently declared English as her major, Kelsey impressed me with her ability to produce compelling analyses of the tough modernist poetry of Wallace Stevens and the complex short stories of James Baldwin. Kelsey was one of the most consistent and enthusiastic contributors to class discussion, taking risks with her ideas and helping me to create a positive learning environment for all the students.

I know that Kelsey plans to teach high school English in her home state of Illinois and to continue her education in a graduate program. Given the life-long commitment to education of the late English Professor Jack Willard Jessee and his wife Dorothy Bates, I believe Kelsey, who is just embarking on her own journey of life-long commitment to English education, is the ideal choice for this scholarship.

September 30: Sigma Tau Delta's Event, "Dinner and Conversations" with Dr. Rebekah Buchanan!

Senior English major Hannah Ross and recent graduate Adam Brown have had poems accepted for publication in Sigma Tau Delta's creative writing journal THE RECTANGLE. Their poems will appear in the annual issue to be released in March, 2012. Congratulations, Hannah and Adam!
