The Leathernecks return 33 letterwinners and 13 starters from the 2008 squad, including seven starters on offense and six on defense, who will look to make 11th-year head coach Don Patterson the all-time winningest coach in Western Illinois history. With a record of 62-45, Patterson is just three wins shy of the most victories in school history.

Saturday’s helmets-only session was the first of 15 official workouts for the Leathernecks. The practice schedule will take a Monday-Wednesday-Friday format for three weeks, and will include Saturday morning scrimmages on April 4 and 11. The annual Bruce Craddock Memorial Spring Game will be played Saturday, April 25 at 1:05 p.m. on Hanson Field.

Katic Signs Contract to Play Professional Soccer

Nikola KaticFormer Western Illinois soccer player Nikola Katic signed a contract to play professional soccer with the United Soccer Leagues’ Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

“It feels amazing to do something that I love so much in my life and get rewarded with a contract,” said Katic. “My dreams have come true, but I am going to have to work harder than I ever have in my life to compete at this level. I am so thankful to coach (Eric) Johnson and the Western Illinois family for helping me so much during my time here and I must credit Coach Johnson for making me the player I am today. I Rockylove my team and Western Illinois, so I can not thank everyone enough for the help they have given me.”

The Makarska, Croatia, native started practice in March and will have to prove himself on the field to earn a starting position in a playing field where most of the athletes are just as tough and competitive as he is.
