University Copier Program: Scanning from Your Copier

This page describes a type of scanning called "pull scan".

  • University Copier Program (UCP) copiers with optional print capability installed typically include pull-scan capability, as well.
  • This page does not cover the type of scanning called "push scan", which departments may purchase as a separate, optional feature.
  • Scanning requires a scan-enabled copier, connected to the University's computer network.
  • Pull-scan capability also requires a TWAIN-compliant software application such as the following:
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional
    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Microsoft Word 2003 (more recent versions may or may not support scanning)
    • Microsoft Publisher 2003 (more recent versions may or may not support scanning)
    • other software (see the software's documentation)

The following describes installation on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. The procedure may vary for other operating systems.

Installing the Network ScanGear Software

  1. Download and decompress the latest version of the Network ScanGear or Color Network ScanGear software (Windows-only) for your operating system from \\ad.wiu.edu\wiu\Public\Install\CanonScan on the University's network.
    • If you have one of the following copier models (you need only look at the first two digits of the model number), download Color Network ScanGear. These models support color and black-only scanning:
      • imageRUNNER 10xx
      • imageRUNNER 20xx
      • imageRUNNER 25xx
      • imageRUNNER 32xx
    • If you have one of the following copier models (you need only look at the first two digits of the model number), download Network ScanGear. These models support only black-only scanning:
      • imageRUNNER 22xx
      • imageRUNNER 30xx
      • imageRUNNER 35xx
      • imageRUNNER 50xx
  2. Run the setup.exe installer inside the driver\english\DISK1 folder. The installer will take you step by step through the installation process. (The default installation options should suffice for most users.)
  3. Launch the ScanGear Tool application from the All Programs > Network ScanGear menu of the Start menu.
  4. In the ScanGear Tool window, click the Discover button. Shortly after pressing the button, a dialog box may ask you to unblock the SGTOOL program; you must unblock the program to use a UCP copier as a scanner.
  5. A ScanGear Tool dialog will display a "Searching for scanners…" status message. Wait for the dialog to disapper. This dialog may remain visible for as much as a couple of minutes.
  6. From the Select Scanner from List area of the ScanGear Tool window, select the copier from which you wish to scan; then, press the Select button.
  7. In the ScanGear Tool window, press the Exit button to quit the ScanGear Tool button.

Using the Network ScanGear Software to Scan

  1. Launch the TWAIN-compliant program from which you wish to scan. Possible programs include the following:
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional
    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Microsoft Word 2003(more recent versions may or may not support scanning)
    • Microsoft Publisher 2003 (more recent versions may or may not support scanning)
    • other software (see the software's documentation)
  2. Put the scanner online for scanning, and place the source document in the copiers automatic document feeder or on the copier's glass (platten).
    • Consult your copier's documentation for details.
    • Typically, putting the scanner online involves pressing the SCAN button on the copier keypad or the Scan button on the copier touchscreen then pressing the Online button on the copier touchscreen.
  3. Initiate scanning from the program from which you wish to scan, and select Network ScanGear as the scanner from which to scan.
    • Consult program documentation for details.
    • Typically, initiating scanning involves invoking a command such as "Insert Picture", "Create", "From scanner…", "Import…", or "Acquire…".
