Men's Basketball Alumni Event Scheduled for February 15
The Western Illinois men's basketball program will hold its annual alumni event on Saturday, February 15th.
The evening will start at 5 p.m. with a facilities tour of Western Hall, followed by a pre-game social at 5:30 in the Hall of Fame room. A buffet dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the East Arena of Western Hall.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. between the Fighting Leathernecks and Summit League foe South Dakota State. A post-game social will take place following the game (approximately 9 p.m.) at Sports Corner, located in downtown Macomb.
Student-Athletes Earn Degrees at Winter Commencement
Sixteen Leatherneck student-athletes earned undergraduate or graduate degrees on Saturday (Dec. 14) during winter commencement.
"Athletics at Western has excelled in academic excellence which is one of the four core values of the university," said Director of Athletics Tommy Bell. "Congratulations to our recent graduates, the entire department is proud of their accomplishments and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
Eight football student-athletes, two from baseball, two men's soccer and one each from women's soccer, men's golf and women's baketball will all receive their undergraduate degrees. One men's track athlete will receive a graduate degree.
Tori Niemann of women's basketball was also named the Department Scholar for the Journalism Department.
Jimmy Holtschlag Named 2nd Team Academic All-America
Western Illinois senior offensive lineman Jimmy Holtschlag (Quincy/Notre Dame) represented the 38th time a Fighting Leatherneck received the prestigious honor of being named to the Capital One Academic All-America team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Holtschlag was a Second Team selection, and one of five representatives from the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Six Leathernecks Earn All-MVFC Accolades
Western Illinois Football landed six Leathernecks on the All-Missouri Valley Football All-Conference teams. The league office announced the selections on Monday (Dec. 2).
Junior defensive back Martinez Davis (Madisonville, KY/Air Force Prep) and senior offensive lineman Jimmy Holtschlag (Quincy/Notre Dame) were voted Second Team All-MVFC.
Junior running back J.C. Baker (Yuma, AZ/Arizona Western CC), junior linebacker Kevin Kintzel (New Lenox/Lincoln-Way West), senior return specialist Antoine Ford (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton) and senior defensive lineman Ryan Demming (Chicago/St. Rita) earned Honorable Mention honors.
Ann Miller Tabbed Academic All-League
Western Illinois volleyball junior outside hitter Ann Miller was named to the Academic All-League team on Wednesday (Dec. 11). Miller is one of seven players in the league to earn the honor, which awards student-athletes for their performances in the classroom and on the court.
The Bettendorf, Iowa owns a 3.909 GPA majoring in Supply Chain Management. She has also been selected to the Academic Honor Roll as a Distinguished Scholar in her first two seasons at Western.
Yves Dietrich Named Academic All-Summit League
Western Illinois men's soccer goalkeeper Yves Dietrich was named to the Academic All-Summit League Team, the conference announced on Tuesday.
In the classroom, Dietrich maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a Psychology major, making him the lone selection to the Academic All-League Team with a 4.0 GPA.
On the field, Dietrich played every minute in goal, one of just two Leathernecks to start every game.
