Western Illinois Student-Athletes Walk in December Graduation Ceremony

GraduatesTwenty-four Leatherneck student-athletes walked across the stage this Saturday (December 15) and earned their respective undergraduate degrees.

"We are extremely proud of the 24 Leatherneck student-athletes who have earned degrees this December," Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine said. "It speaks volumes for the commitment our coaches have made to bring in individuals who are able to succeed not only on the field of play but also in the classroom. These student-athletes have shown a great amount of dedication. We hope that they go on to lead successful lives and remember that they are always a member of the Leatherneck family."

Western Illinois Softball Releases High School Winter Clinic Dates

Western Illinois softball head coach Holly Van Vlymen announced the dates of the Winter Clinic on Monday (Dec. 3). Day one is on Saturday (Jan. 26) and day two will take place on Sunday (Jan. 27).

Each day will offer two sessions, one for pitching/catching and one for offense/defense. The clinic is for individuals sixth grade and older. The cost of one session is $90 and two sessions can be purchased for $130. Those registered for two sessions, will receive a lunch provided by Jimmy John's. Discounted group rates (four participant minimum) are also available.

Bales, Bruinsma Named All-Midwest Region

Soccer HonorsWestern Illinois men's soccer junior Charlie Bales and senior Nathan Bruinsma were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Midwest Region team.

Bales, a defender, earned Second Team honors, while Bruinsma, a forward, was named to the Third Team.

Football Announces End of Year Awards

MVPsWestern Illinois Football announced the end of year awards on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 9). The annual banquet honoring the 2012 team was held in the University Union.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker J.J. Raffelson (Lake Zurich/Lake Zurich) and junior kicker Pat Smith (Quincy/Notre Dame) were voted Co-Most Valuable Player.

Leatherneck Volleyball Announces Team Awards

MVPWestern Illinois volleyball head coach April Hall announced the 2012 team awards Sunday (Dec. 2) as the team celebrated the season with a banquet at Magnolias.

"We had a great celebration planned for our student-athletes, families, administration and staff at our 2012 volleyball banquet, said coach Hall. "It was a reflection of the many strides we made, and how this program is growing and moving forward with this season as its foundation."

Leatherneck Baseball Ends Fall Workouts with ‘Omaha Challenge’

Western Illinois baseball closes out the fall workout season with the 'Omaha Challenge' all this week. The challenge is set up to test the agility and strength of the players. The three-day event began on Monday (Nov. 26), and continued Wednesday (Nov. 28). The challenge will conclude this Friday (Nov. 30).

All 34 players on the roster were split into four separate teams at the beginning of the week. Each squad has battled it out thus far with hopes that their team will take home the challenge championship.
