The Summit League Announces Fall Academic All-League Recipients
The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks had 54 student-athletes make the Summit League Fall Academic All-League Team as announced on Thursday (January 26).
A total of 517 student-athletes earned recognition from the Summit League. Oakland led the way with 62 Grizzlies making the list, followed by IUPUI with 59. Western Illinois had the third highest amount selected. Read more.
Western Illinois Athletics Unveils New Basketball Practice Facility
The Western Illinois University Athletic Department unveiled a new on-campus basketball practice facility at Brophy Hall Friday (Jan. 20). A hardwood floor was installed during the University's Winter Break. Other aesthetic enhancements to the facility are forthcoming.
Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine spoke about how the facility positively impacts both Fighting Leatherneck basketball programs and the overall student-athlete experience.
"This new facility is certainly an enhancement that will benefit both the Kinesiology Department and Intercollegiate Athletics," said Van Alstine. "We are extremely grateful and appreciative with the interest and support of (Department of Kinesiology chairperson) Dr. Janet Wigglesworth and the Department of Kinesiology. Read more.
Football End of the Year Notes
Western Illinois finished the season 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference... The Leathernecks were 2-3 heading into the bye week and lost their final six games of the year. Read more.
Tom Lilja Picks Up Preseason Honor
After collecting Second Team All-Summit League and All-Tournament Team honors last season, Western Illinois first baseman Tom Lilja (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) begins his senior campaign by picking up a preseason honor from College Sports Madness.

Jamie Goss and Megan Kelly Recognized by College Sports Madness
The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck softball team had two members named to College Sports Madness 2012 Preseason All-Summit League team Wednesday (Jan. 11).
Senior infielder Jamie Goss was tabbed first-team, while sophomore infielder Megan Kelly was named to the second team. Read more.
Leatherneck Football Adds Three Coaches to Staff
Western Illinois head football coach Mark Hendrickson announced the hiring of three assistant coaches to his staff.
Hendrickson hired a pair of Wisconsin Badger alums as his line coaches - Jason Eck will take over as the offensive line coach while Jake Sprague was hired as defensive line coach. Leatherneck standout and former assistant coach Kevin Almlie returns to Hendrickson's staff as a defensive assistant coach working with the secondary. Read more.
