Where in the World is Dr. Carter?

Dr. Rick CarterDid you know Western Illinois University is an active member of the international higher education community? Dr. Rick Carter, Executive Director of the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach is committed to internationalizing WIU and has visited the world over…and over this past year. Last October he was in Washington, DC with WIU President, Dr. Jack Thomas where they visited the embassies of nine different countries within the space of 72 hours. According to University Relations, “As a part of the University’s internationalization efforts, Thomas and Carter met with embassy officials from South Korea, Japan, Peru, China, Ecuador, Brazil, Botswana, Thailand and Chile.” This sort of international relationship building is an ongoing process, so trips like these occur fairly regularly. However, in late February through the first two weeks of March, Dr. Carter was at a State of Illinois trade mission in China. This is not what might be considered a common business trip to most, but for Dr. Carter, it’s just another part of his year of constant travel. By the second week in April, Dr. Carter was off again, this time to Botswana, a small but mineral rich democratic South African country. September saw Dr. Carter in Washington again visiting embassies to discuss the educational opportunities offered at WIU. The first week of this November was spent in Myanmar (Burma). In addition, the Western Illinois University Women’s basketball team hosted the 2nd Females Athletic International Ambassadors event on November 4th. Western welcomed fifteen Brazilian students this fall and has hosted The Royal Thai Embassy (resulting in the enrollment of 10 high achieving Thai students) this past spring and hosted Her Excellency Ambassador Ms. Tebelelo Seretse of the Republic of Botswana and other dignitaries at the Macomb Campus in April. Western’s Global Initiative is alive and growing, just one more reason to be proud to be a Leatherneck!
