Jack Houpt Named to 2012-13 Summit League All-Academic Team

Jack HouptWestern Illinois’ Jack Houpt was one of five Summit League players named to the 2012-13 Summit League Academic All-League Team as voted by the Faculty Athletic Representatives and Sports Information Directors of the league’s nine member institutions.

Houpt, a graduate student with a 3.666 GPA in sport management, has started all 30 games for the Leathernecks this season and averages 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 91.7 percent from the free throw line and 41.2 percent from three-point range while helping lead his team to the regular season co-championship.

Leatherneck Football Golf Outing Scheduled for April 20

Football Golf OutingWestern Illinois begins a new era of Leatherneck Football as head coach Bob Nielson and his coaching staff is scheduled to begin spring practice on Wednesday, March 20. The spring season will conclude on Friday, April 19, and there is a Leatherneck Football Golf Outing set for Saturday, April 20.

Events surrounding the spring football game begin Friday night at 5 p.m. with a tailgate party at Hanson Field. Following the spring game - starting at 7 p.m. - a postgame social will be held.

On Saturday, the Leatherneck Football Golf Outing will take place at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course. Lunch begins at 12:30 with a 2 p.m. start. The 4-person best ball scramble costs $60 per person, which includes a cart and 18 holes. A silent auction will take place following the outing, and awards will also be handed out following the event.

Jim Molinari Earns The Summit League's 'Coach of the Year' Honor

Men's Basketball head coach Jim Molinari has been named The Summit League's 'Coach of the Year' and Terell Parks has been tabbed 'Defensive Player of the Year' by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media.

Ashley Luke Named Summit League 'Newcomer of the Year'

Western Illinois Redshirt-freshman Ashley Luke was named the Summit League's women's basketball 'Newcomer of the Year,' as well as Second Team All-Summit League and All-Newcomer Team, the conference announced on Thursday afternoon.

Luke becomes the program's sixth-ever and third straight Newcomer of the Year, after Saule Kontautaite won the award last season and Sadie Webb won in 2010-11.

Nathaniel Marshall Named Academic All-Summit League

Junior Nathaniel Marshall was named to the Academic All-Summit League team, the conference announced on Thursday afternoon.

Marshall holds a 3.563 cumulative grade point average as a Biology major.

At the Summit League Championships, Marshall won the weight throw title with a throw of 65-07.50, a mark that ranks second in program history and is currently 25th-best in Division I.

Josh Davis Named Summit League Swimming & Diving Academic All-League

Josh Davis was voted to the Summit League Swimming and Diving Academic All-League Team by the faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors from each member institution.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions.  The swimming and diving all-league teams are made up of the 10 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.

Davis is a senior Mathematics major with a cumulative GPA of 3.969.
