MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Mock Trial Team competed in the American Mock Trial Association's regional tournament in Wheaton, IL, in late February.

WIU senior Political Science major and Mock Trial Team President Kate Chavez, of Rockford, IL, said the trip was a great opportunity to learn how the court systems work.

"Being a political science major wanting to pursue law, this gave me the chance to learn how to work as a team and create a case," said Chavez. "It was an amazing bonding experience with fellow WIU students, and it gave us the opportunity to grow as team with better coordination."

Chavez added that the mock trial experience has enhanced her educational experience by helping her learn how to speak publicly with "passion and influence."

"This was an experience that I will be able to carry with me for a while and I am very grateful to be able to be a part of it," she said.

During the event, junior history (pre-law) major Allison Elias, of Breese, IL, was recognized as an "Outstanding Witness."

Other members of the WIU Mock Trial Team attending the event, include: senior law enforcement and justice administration (LEJA) and foreign languages and cultures double major Natalie Palomino, of Chicago; sophomore LEJA major Leslie Eutsler, of Macomb; junior pre-business (pre-law) major Joseph Zaylik, of Steger, IL; senior LEJA (pre-law) major and Pre-law and Spanish minor Joshlyn Soto, of Gurnee, IL; and sophomore forensic psychology major Mitchell White, of Glen Carbon, IL.
